Week 5 - Assignment :Role of Technology and Assessment in Continuous School Improvement - Written By Greg Haut 6/2/2024
Interview a principal, assessment coordinator, or individual of similar rank and position in your school or district. This person should have a leadership role related to continuous school improvement. If you are not currently teaching, reach out to someone at a local school. Ask the following questions: What practices are currently in place to support continuous school improvement? What role does authentic assessment play in continuous school improvement practices? How does technology support assessment in continuous school improvement practices? Submit a paper including the name of the individual interviewed, position, professional contact information (including email address), school and/or district, and responses. Include a reflective portion in which you make connections between what you learned and the required studies. Submission Content Submission Content I had a discussion with Todd Nitz, the principal of Rockford Lutheran Schools, regarding the following three questions. Todd Nitz is my direct supervisor and handles all meetings, as well as shares information with the staff. His email is tnitz@rockfordlutheran.org. This is particularly important as our current counselor will be retiring, and someone else will be taking their place. What practices are currently in place to support continuous school improvement? There are different levels currently in place to create a culture of continuous school improvement. 1) As a private school, we go through an accreditation process every 5 years which forces us to analyze ourself based on prescribed categories which are basically the nationally accepted marks of quality schools. We do survey’s of our constituents and attempt to self-evalute. We meet in committees to look over those results and then seek out correlating data which would prove or disprove. Where we find ourselves in need of growth, we write out a plan for improvement including an expected timeline. A group of outside educators then come in to verify those results and offer further recommendations for improvement. 2) We have three inservice/workshops organized and hosted during the school year bringing in outside speakers to offer new knowledge and strengthen existing skills. 3) Teachers are sent to subject specific conferences to spark new ideas and sharpen existing ones. 4) Departments and grade levels meet and discuss current practices and what could be tried in the future to improve pedagogy. 5) An instructional coach hired to meet with select teachers and work with them to improve instruction. Administrators observing classes and offering support to teachers. 6) Teachers collecting survey feedback from students on what worked for students in the classroom. Areas that did not happen this current school year but we seek to include. • Teachers walking through educational reading as a faculty for discussion how that would look at our campus. • Dedicated and regular time for teachers to demonstrate/share methodology with other teachers (perhaps every 4th week at a faculty meeting, etc.) • A system created where current teachers observing other teachers to take ideas from and share with each other. What role does authentic assessment play in continuous school improvement practices? Education is not meant to be a situation where we experience days with students without a a specific educational goal in mind. Having a figurative goal to travel to a particular location with students, we need markers to see if they are traveling with us on that journey. This is the core of assessment, seeing if they are moving down a desired path. Thus assessments are used as marker points and we need to be able to be confidant in what they are telling us. In order to make sure that our evaluation of expected standards is authentic (and not accidentally biased), it is important to: A - use other corroborative evidences to confirm our judgement. This currently takes places in numerous ways at Rockford Lutheran. • Student success in competitive art or science competitions. • Student athlete success in athletic competitions. • Student academic competitions success and Model UN success. • Standardized testing results (ACT, SAT,etc) • Areas of growth: writing competitions, language competitions. B – establish that what we are testing is what we are assessing. This is done by being intentional about matching written lesson objectives to the individual instructor assessment methods. (ie. Are we say we are promoting critical thinking but our assessment tools reward point mainly for recall/ recognition skills?). At RLS, we recently had a workshop helping us to look at our unit objectives compared to our assessment questions, but we have work to do on a regular basis to ensure this is the case. How does technology support assessment in continuous school improvement practices? Technology is a tool for an educator to use when it is beneficial. It is not the goal and never should be the priority, but it may be the transportation that increases learning opportunities. Technology offers the potential to a) deliver information to students in an expedient and dynamic (audio/visual) way. b) gain students access to resources that they could not physically create (digital labs, digital tours and library access, etc) c) communicate and share within a faster and farther reaching system. When it comes to assessment, technology has the potential to create a level of individualization for the students through assignments that differentiate based upon student interest and abilities. We currently use online MAP testing in the junior high and online standardized testing in the senior high to assessstudentachievement. We use IXL software in our junior high as part of our instruction. Numerous instructors (ie. Online health class) use Edpuzzle to make information shared through videos to be interactive and create another form of assessing a student’s knowledge. There are some assessment technology options in the educational world which will ask harder and easier questions in response to individual student previous responses until their “baseline” level can be established. We are not currently using this product, it seems to be selectively used still within the educational community. I think the prospect is high for growth of using technology to push school improvement, but the educational world seems to have trouble making full use of this opportunity as schools: • Struggle with resources to purchase the technology • Struggle to find individuals within education with enough IT knowledge to implement much of this as IT skills will find other professional fields more lucrative. • Struggle to find time for implementation in a system where many teachers are already overworked After carefully considering Mr. Todd Nitz's presentation, I believe that Rockford Lutheran is strongly committed to implementing technology effectively and encourages all staff to do their best and utilize conclusive data to drive our goals. Mr. Nitz emphasizes the need for collaborative work on our Schoolwide Improvement Plan (SIP) and the accreditation process, aligning with the concept of continuous improvement in education reform. Our action research, led by the entire staff, is compiled by Mr. Nitz for accreditation and SIP purposes. Our staff meetings are divided into three groups, with a focus on technology, multiculturalism, and curriculum. As an educator, I contribute to the multicultural group. The emphasis on technology at Rockford Lutheran is evident, with the utilization of an LMS like Canvas and one-to-one Chromebooks for all students. It is clear that the schoolwide improvement plan has been continually adapted with technology at the forefront. With the support of Mr. Todd Nitz and close collaboration among the staff, I am confident that we will successfully implement the outlined strategies.
REFLECTION
How did completing this work contribute toward your understanding of the objective? Completing this work through interviewing, the principal about our sip helped me understand henning of where we are where we're going, and where we need to be as a school as an organization and it led me to see what the principal values as far as the role of education how to use it as a tool as well as the indications and pros and cons of implementing everything we want to do. What do you know now that you didn’t know at the beginning of the course because of this work? I learned a lot from what my principal responded with, and I know a deeper look into his vision of where he wants to go. I know where we're at, and I am hoping to continue to work with him to bring the vision of where he wants to be. What do you like about this work? About this work, I like the answers that I was given about the sip. I like the honesty and the fact that we work together as a staff through the SIP and accreditation process and are part of what is happening I also really appreciate the fact that my voice is heard and that even though what I do in the art room is a small man, part of it I like, knowing that my piece of the puzzle fits. What is one thing you can improve upon in this work? In this work I would have to include more of the required studies in my response to what I read I was given a great wealth of information and knowledge from the principal, and I wish I had dove deeper into my response and and where and what I will do, even though I know it, the principal knows it. I did not articulate it very well in this particular paper. What long and short-term goals can you set for yourself based on completion of this work? For long-term and short-term goals I think it's very clear that I want to continue to be at the forefront and leading the way when it comes to utilizing the technology going through safety through the data helping with the accreditation process as department head I the visual arts I like having input I want to continue with that work with the school students and the faculty.

Week 7 - Discussion: Digital Portfolio Uses and Tools
Greg Haut 6-12-2024
How do or could you integrate digital portfolios into your assessment process? Briefly describe the purpose, process, audience, evaluation, platform, etc. As a Visual Arts Educator, I am fortunate to utilize digital portfolios as the primary assessment method. Artsonia has been an integral tool for the past four years, allowing students to conveniently compile all their pieces into one well-organized platform. Students are also required to craft artist statements. While the primary audience for Artsonia is the parents, myself, and anyone else interested, I can also gather pieces from there to submit to exhibitions, competitions, publications, and for inclusion in art school admission portfolios. This platform allows me to effectively track their progress and creative development. What benefits would there be in moving from a traditional portfolio to a digital portfolio? . Specifically consider benefits to assessment. According to Kharbach, (2023, December 14), "Here are some significant benefits students reap from integrating portfolios into their learning process: Tracking Growth: Portfolios enable students to document their learning journey and growth over time. Showcasing Learning: They offer a platform for students to exhibit their learning achievements. Self-Assessment and Development: Portfolios serve as tools for self-reflection and personal growth. Focusing on Learning Process: They shift the focus from end products to the learning journey itself. Promoting Active Engagement: This fosters deeper learning as students immerse themselves in their education. Developing Metacognitive Skills: They enhance reflective practices and self-directed learning. Empowering Student Voice: Portfolios give students a medium to express themselves. Building Confidence: They aid in self-discovery and confidence enhancement. Identity Development: Portfolios assist in forming personal and academic identities. Identifying Strengths and Areas for Improvement: They help students recognize their capabilities and areas needing enhancement. Enhancing Writing Skills: Portfolios contribute to the development of students’ writing abilities. Showcasing Achievements: They provide tangible evidence of achievements for future opportunities, like employment" The benefits of the visual arts program at RLS are clearly evident in the work of our students. I can easily analyze this data to inform my curriculum development. For instance, I noted that my 160 students created 4,011 art pieces last year. By tracking this information over the years and correlating it with awards, I can create a comprehensive spreadsheet for each year. This data also aids in creating a well-informed final exam, as students provide feedback on their favorite and least favorite pieces, enabling me to make necessary adjustments to my teaching practices. Given what you learned last week, what privacy issues might you need to take into consideration when using digital portfolios? Artsonia is fantastic because, even when parents opt not to publish their child's work online, we can still view it while respecting their privacy. Additionally, Artsonia has received high scores across various categories. Common Sense Education conducted a review of Artsonia and bestowed a privacy rating of 89%, deeming it a pass according to their expert evaluation. For purposes of creating your own digital portfolio, what tool/platform will you be using and why? I am currently exploring website options for my artistic endeavors. I aim to create an interactive and visually striking platform that is distinct from others. As an artist, I cherish individuality and wish to present my hard work in a format that goes beyond a traditional slideshow or a standard "Here is what I learned" approach. At the moment, I am favoring the idea of using a Wix page for this purpose. Reference Kharbach, M. (2023, December 14). Best digital portfolio tools for students. REFLECTION
How did completing this work contribute toward your understanding of the objective? Completing this work contributed towards the objection as with this discussion I was able to dive into I was able to why Artsonia portfolios are so important to students and viewers and how they relate to my standards as well as assessments and how we use them in the visual art room every single day. What do you know now that you didn’t know at the beginning of the course because of this work? I've never thought about how important these digital portfolios could be in other classroom settings as opposed to just my classroom as a high school visual art teacher I'm so focused on one room one place one time what I'm doing. I realize the importance that I could make a big difference in our school or even on a larger scale to push for portfolios everywhere. What do you like about this work? About this work, I like that for once the art room seems to have successfully been doing something with technology a lot of times I hear why is Art important What is this it's not a core class or you are just an art teacher to see that the visual arts are just as important and utilizing technology and grasping portfolios it's very strong about the organizational key every aspect of it and it was awesome to discuss in a paper where for once we were on top of our game. What is one thing you can improve upon in this work? In this work, I could probably improve upon having even more APA citations to the required studies as it would benefit to show the relevance at an even higher level. I know what we're doing. I would like to be able to say what we're doing in accordance to be awesome to, every single factor aligned to something. What long and short-term goals can you set for yourself based on completion of this work? My long-term goal will be to continue to use digital portfolios to apply knowledge from the digital portfolios to show growth in digital portfolios, and I would like to speak or help others create them if they're not sure where to start or where to begin or if they don't understand the relevance that I'll be my fifth year Rockford Lutheran I say here's their accumulation of work.
